Many Hands, One Table: Making Bowls for Empty Bowls
There is something quietly powerful about a handmade bowl. It begins as a small piece of clay, shaped by one pair of hands, and ends up holding something that brings people together. For this local food-bank fundraiser, that path from clay to table became a true community effort.
Brian and Wendy at Olympic Coast Creative made the project possible from the start. They donated the clay, opened their studio, set out the wheels, and invited students to throw alongside them. Every bowl carried a different set of fingerprints and a little of each maker’s character. Together, the group created a generous collection of forms—round, tall, open, slightly wonky, and entirely one of a kind.
Once the throwing was finished, Brian took on the careful next stage. He trimmed the bowls, refining their feet and profiles, then bisque fired them so they would be ready for glaze.
Pamela and Kathie spent two full days glazing. The studio tables filled with bowls as they considered color, surface, and the way each glaze might move in the heat. Some choices were quiet and earthy; others were bright, layered, or a little unexpected. Glazing is part planning and part trust—once the kiln closes, fire and chemistry finish the work.
After the final glaze firing, the bowls emerged ready for the event. Each one was made to be chosen, used, and taken home as a reminder that creativity can help care for a community. What began with donated clay and shared studio time became something larger: potters learning together, friends working side by side, and handmade objects helping put food on local tables.
This is the kind of work we believe in at Pine & Kiln Pottery. Handmade pottery is personal, but it does not have to be solitary. When artists, students, teachers, and neighbors bring what they can, even a simple bowl can carry real generosity.
